What are causal prepositions?

Causal prepositions (kausale Präpositionen) introduce a reason or purpose.

Common causal prepositions in German include wegen (wegen des Wetters because of the weather), dank (danke ihrer Hilfe thanks to their help), aus (aus Versehen by accident), etc.

Causal prepositions + accusative

The following causal prepositions are always followed by the accusative case:

auf
 at + wish/request/command Auf ausdrücklichen Wunsch vieler Einwohner wurde eine Reinigungsaktion organisiert. A cleaning campaign was organised at the request of many residents.

für		 for + recipient Es gibt neue Bänke für den Park. There are new benches for the park.
for + goal Die Einwohner engagieren sich für einen schönen Park. The locals are committed to a beautiful park.
gegen against Sie bekamen Ohrenschützer gegen den Lärm des Laubsaugers. They were given ear defenders against the noise of the leaf blower.

Causal prepositions + dative

The following causal prepositions are always followed by the dative case:

aus

 for/out of + emotion
(reason for a conscious/deliberate action)		 Aus Angst vor Verletzungen trugen die meisten Helfer Handschuhe. Most of the helpers wore gloves for fear of injury.
used before nouns like Eile, Grund, Interesse, Leichtsinn, Überzeugung, Versehen … Aus Versehen stand in einigen Einladungen ein falsches Datum. Some of the invitations contained the wrong date by accident.
von by + agent of an action
(in passive sentences)		 Der Park wurde von einigen Einwohnern als Müllkippe genutzt. The park was being used as a rubbish tip by some locals.
vor with/from + emotion (Angst, Wut, Freude …)
(reason for an involuntary (re)action)		 Im Gebüsch saß ein Hase und zitterte vor Angst. There was a rabbit sitting in the bushes trembling with fear.
used before the nouns Begeisterung, Schmerzen Vor lauter Begeisterung arbeiteten die Helfer ohne Pause. Full of enthusiasm, the helpers worked non-stop.

 to + action/event Zur Aktion waren alle Bewohner des Ortes eingeladen. All residents were invited to the event.
to + purpose Die meisten Freiwilligen trugen Handschuhe zum Schutz vor Verletzungen. Most of the volunteers wore gloves to protect themselves from injuries.
to + action
(nominalised verb or noun ending in -ung)		 Viele Menschen sind zum Reinigen/zur Reinigung des Parks gekommen. Many people came to clean the park.

Causal prepositions + genitive

The following causal prepositions are always followed by the genitive case:

Preposition Meaning Example
angesichts because of Angesichts des vielen Mülls fühlte sich im Park niemand mehr wohl. No one felt comfortable in the park any more because of all the rubbish.
anlässlich because of + occasion Anlässlich des World Clean Up Days fand gestern eine Reinigungsaktion statt. A clean-up campaign took place yesterday to mark World Clean Up Day.
aufgrund due to Aufgrund des tollen Wetters kamen viele Freiwillige. Many volunteers came because of the good weather.
dank thanks to Dank der Freiwilligen ist der Park jetzt wieder schön. The park is beautiful again thanks to the volunteers.
… halber for the sake of/on account of
(only with certain nouns, e.g. Ordnung, Sicherheit, Umstände, Vorsicht …)		 Der Ordnung halber mussten sich alle Helfer registrieren. All helpers had to register for the sake of organisation.
infolge as a result of Infolge einer Sparmaßnahme ist der Park in den letzten Jahren verwildert. As a result of a cost-cutting measure, the park has become overgrown in the last few years.
mangels due to a lack of Mangels finanzieller Mittel wird der Park in unserem Ort nicht mehr professionell gepflegt. Due to a lack of financing, the park in our village is no longer professionally maintained.
trotz despite Trotz des Badewetters kamen auch viele Kinder und Jugendliche zum Helfen. Lots of children and teenagers came to help, even though it was perfect weather for swimming.
ungeachtet regardless of Ungeachtet der Empfehlungen trugen nicht alle Helfer Handschuhe. Not all helpers wore gloves, regardless of our recommendations.
wegen because of Wegen des Mülls stank es an vielen Stellen im Park. It stank in many areas of the park because of the rubbish.
