What are prepositions of manner?

Prepositions of manner (modale Präpositionen) indicate how or by which means.

Common prepositions of manner in German include aus (aus Filz made of felt), für (für nur 10 Euro for just €10), ohne (ohne Probleme without problems), etc.

Geman prepositions of manner can express various things:

  • manner or means (Wie?)
  • what something is made of (Woraus?)
  • recipient (Für wen?)
  • numbers (Wie viel?)
  • a contradiction to an expectation/piece of advice/rumour (Welcher Meinung zum Trotz?)

Prepositions of manner + accusative

The following prepositions of manner are always followed by the accusative:

auf in a … way/manner Die Clowns begrüßen das Publikum auf eine sehr lustige Art. The clowns greet the audience in a funny way.
in + language* Sie sprechen auf Englisch mit den Leuten. They speak to the people in English.
bis auf
 including Die Vorstellung war bis auf den letzten Platz ausverkauft. The show was sold out to the very last seat.
apart from Bis auf meinen Mann waren alle begeistert von der Vorstellung. Everyone loved the show apart from my husband.
für for Diese Luftballon-Figur ist für mich. This balloon animal is for me.
Wir haben die Karten für nur 10 Euro bekommen. We got the tickets for just €10.
Für diese Tageszeit sind viele Leute in den Zirkus gekommen. There are a lot of people at the circus for this time of day.

(e.g. step by step, piece by piece)		 Am Einlass geht es Schritt für Schritt vorwärts. At the entrance, things are moving forward step by step.
ohne without Es ist ein Zirkus ohne wilde Tiere – das gefällt mir sehr. It’s a circus without any wild animals, which I really like.
um around/about
(approximate value)		 Normalerweise kosten die Eintrittskarten um die 20 Euro. The tickets normally cost around €20.

*Languages: auf or in?

When we say the name of the language alone, we use the preposition auf.

Example:
Die Clowns sprechen auf Englisch mit dem Publikum. The clowns speak to the audience in English.

However, if there is an adjective before the name of the language, we use the preposition in.

Example:
Der Zirkusdirektor macht seine Ansagen in gutem Deutsch. The ringmaster makes his announcements in good German.

We also use in with the word Sprache.

Example:
In welcher Sprache unterhalten sich die Artisten miteinander? Which language do the artists use talk to each other?

Prepositions of manner + dative

The following prepositions of manner are always followed by the dative case:

in in Die Clowns tragen Kleidung in knalligen Farben. The clowns are wearing clothes in bright colours.
Sie sprechen in einer anderen Sprache. They’re speaking in another language.

 with Die Clowns interagieren mit dem Publikum. The clowns are interacting with the audience.
Der Clown mit den blauen Haaren formt Figuren aus Luftballons. The clown with the blue hair is making balloon animals.
via a mode of transport
(often no preposition used in English)		 Wir sind mit dem Bus zum Zirkus gefahren. We took the bus to the circus.
unter under Mein Mann ist nur unter großem Protest mitgegangen. Er mag keine Clowns. My husband only came under great protest. He doesn’t like clowns.
von

 by Das Zirkus-Orchester spielt Musik von internationalen Künstlern. The circus orchestra plays music by international artists.
from Ich habe die Eintrittskarten von einer Bekannten bekommen. I got the tickets from a friend.
zu

 for + the word Preis Wir haben die Karten zum halben Preis bekommen. We got the tickets for half price.
to Das Verhältnis von Kindern zu Erwachsenen im Publikum ist etwa 2 zu 3. The ratio of children to adults in the audience is about 2 to 3.
… zuliebe for the sake of …
 Den Kindern zuliebe sind wir in den Zirkus gegangen. We went to the circus for the sake of the kids.

Prepositions of manner + genitive

The following prepositions of manner are always followed by the genitive case:

Preposition Meaning Example
entgegen contrary to Entgegen meiner Erwartung war die Vorstellung toll. Contrary to my expectations, the show was great.
exklusive excluding/not including Exklusive der Pause dauert eine Vorstellung 90 Minuten. Excluding the break, the show lasts 90 minutes.
inklusive including Inklusive der Pause dauert eine Vorstellung etwa zwei Stunden. Including the break, the show lasts around two hours.
mithilfe with the help of/thanks to Mithilfe einer Lasershow wird eine magische Atmosphäre geschaffen. A magical atmosphere is created with the help of a laser show.
statt instead Statt wilder Tiere gibt es in diesem Zirkus eine atemberaubende Lasershow. Instead of wild animals, this circus offers a breathtaking laser show.
