Der Geburtstag meiner Cousine

Gestern feierten wir den 30. Geburtstag meiner Cousine Katrin. Die meisten Gäste waren für 15 Uhr eingeladen, aber ich war schon früher da, um bei den Vorbereitungen zu helfen. Ich deckte den Tisch, stellte die Kerzen auf und schmückte die ganze Wohnung mit Luftballons. Und dann klingelte es auch schon an der Tür.

Katrin erhielt viele Glückwunschkarten, Blumensträuße und tolle Geschenke. Und jeder Gast versicherte ihr: „Du siehst so jung aus, dein Alter sieht man dir gar nicht an!“ Als alle Gäste da waren, setzten wir uns, um Katrins selbstgebackene Kuchen und Torten zu probieren. Da neben der Familie auch viele Freunde gekommen waren, wurde es ein bisschen eng in der Wohnung, aber jeder fand einen Platz.

Gegen 19 Uhr war es Zeit fürs Abendessen. Katrin und ich hatten in der Küche ein Buffet vorbereitet, an dem sich jeder bedienen konnte. Ganz typisch für Deutschland sind Kartoffelsalat und Würstchen, die durften natürlich auch auf unserem Buffet nicht fehlen.

Als ich mit meinem Teller aus der Küche kam, wunderte ich mich, warum im Flur Geschenkband und zerrissenes Geschenkpapier lagen. Ich folgte der Spur und entdeckte die Übeltäter: Katrins Katzen hatten ein kleines Geschenk geöffnet. Und während eine Katze mit der Schleife spielte, wollte die andere gerade das Geschenk fressen – ein Stück Seife. Schnell nahm ich die Seife weg, die war allerdings schon ein wenig angefressen. Ich hoffe nur, dass keine Seifenblasen entstehen, wenn die Katze das nächste Mal Wasser trinkt!

My Cousin’s Birthday

Yesterday we celebrated my cousin Katrin’s 30th birthday. Most of the guests were invited for 3 o’clock, but I was there earlier to help with the preparations. I set the table, set up the candles, and decorated the entire apartment with balloons. And by that time the doorbell was already ringing!

Katrin received a lot of birthday cards, flowers and lovely gifts. And every guest assured her: “You look so young, you don’t look your age at all!” Once all the guests were there, we sat down to try Katherine’s home-made cakes and tarts. Since a lot of friends had come as well as the family, there wasn’t a lot of room in the apartment, but everybody found a seat.

Around 7 o’clock it was time for dinner. Katherine and I had prepared a buffet in the kitchen, where everyone could help themselves. Potato salad and sausages are classic German foods, so of course we had those at our buffet as well.

As I came out of the kitchen with my plate, I wondered why there was ribbon and torn wrapping paper in the hall. I followed the trail and discovered the culprit: Katrin’s cats had opened a small gift. And while one cat played with the bow, the other was about to eat the gift – a bar of soap. I quickly took away the soap, but it was already somewhat chewed. I just hope there won’t be any soap bubbles the next time the cat drinks water!
