What’s the difference between wann, wenn and als?

The words wann, wenn and als often cause difficulty for learners of German because they can all mean when, depending on the context.

Example

Kundin: Ich glaube, meine Heizung ist kaputt.

Service: Wann haben Sie das Problem bemerkt?

Kundin: Als ich heute aufgestanden bin, war es kalt in der Wohnung. Als mein Mann noch lebte, hatte ich nie solche Probleme. Wenn etwas kaputt war, hat er es immer repariert.

Service: Keine Sorge, wir schicken jemanden zu Ihnen. Ich weiß noch nicht, wann der Techniker heute Zeit hat. Wenn er bei Kunden ist, schaltet er manchmal sein Handy ab. Aber wenn dieses Gespräch zu Ende ist, versuche ich ihn zu erreichen. Er ruft Sie dann zurück.

Wann

Wann is a question word (= when?). It means when in the sense of at what time/at which point in time?

Examples:
Wann haben Sie das Problem bemerkt?When did you notice the problem?

Use seit wann to ask about duration (= how long?).

Example:
Seit wann haben Sie das Problem?How long have you had the problem?

We can also use wann in indirect questions.

Example:
Ich weiß nicht, wann der Techniker Zeit hat.I don’t know when the technician is available.

Wenn

Wenn (= when/if/whenever) has different meanings depending on the context:

  • in reference to a time in the present or future, wenn = when(ever)
Examples:
Wenn er bei Kunden ist, schaltet er manchmal sein Handy ab.When(ever) he’s with customers, he sometimes turns his phone off. (present)
Wenn dieses Gespräch zu Ende ist, versuche ich den Techniker zu erreichen.When this call is over, I’ll try to reach the technician. (future)
  • when expressing a condition (in any tense), wenn = when/if
Example:
Wenn er das nicht reparieren kann, schicken wir einen anderen Techniker.If he can’t repair it, we’ll send another technician.
  • in reference to a repeated past action, wenn = whenever (signal words: immer/jedes Mal)
Example:
Wenn etwas kaputt war, hat er es immer repariert.Whenever something was broken, he always repaired it.

Als

Als (= when) is only used for the past. It can refer to:

  • a one-off event or specific moment in the past
Example:
Als ich heute aufgestanden bin, war es kalt in der Wohnung.When I got up this morning, it was cold in the flat.
  • a past situation or state (with verbs like haben, leben, sein, wohnen …)
Example:
Als mein Mann noch lebte, hatte ich nie solche Probleme.When my husband was still alive, I never had such problems.

Remember: als and wenn only appear in subordinate clauses. This means that the conjugated verb comes at the end of the clause.

Examples:
Als ich aufgestanden bin, …
not: Als ich bin aufgestanden, …
Wenn etwas kaputt war, …
not: Wenn etwas war kaputt …
